Tawang experiential tour in west of Arunachal is the most attempted tour in Arunachal Pradesh. Mainly inhabited by the Monpas tribe (a buddhist tribe), the entire experience offers some incredibly scenic views and will be a memorable one for every explorer.

Itinerary

Day 1: Guwahati to Bhalukpong (204 kms; 6 hours)
Pickup from Guwahati airport and drive to Bhalukpong, on the Assam Arunachal border. Overnight at Prashanti Cottage

Day 2: Bhalukpong to Dirang (196 kms; 6.5 hours)
After breakfast commence your drive to the picturesque valley of Dirang. On reaching the Assam-Arunachal border at Bhalukpong, the road will wind up the verdant mountains cut by the Kameng river. You will take a brief halt at Tipi Orchid Centre, to see different varieties of orchids found in Arunachal. Overnight at Dirang Boutique Cottage / Hotel Pemaling / Gonpalok homestay

Day 3: Dirang sightseeing
In the morning undertake a scenic drive to Mandala. Over here you will visit the 108 mane built as per traditional Buddhist beliefs. On the way you will visit the Dirang dzong, which was built in the 15th century, to ward of attacks from the Tibetan armies. By afternoon drive back to Dirang where you will visit the Thupsung Dhargye monastery. It is a newly constructed monastery offering grand views of the Dirang valley. Day 4: Dirang to Tawang (194 kms; 7 to 8 hours)
Commence the most scenic drive of your trip early in the morning. The road keeps climbing up all the way till Sela pass offering some grand panoramas of the region. Take a brief halt at the 4,170-mtrs Sela pass, admiring the beautiful lake and its surroundings. On crossing Sela pass you will descend to Jung, where you will take a short break to visit the powerful Nuranang waterfalls. Continue your drive to Tawang. Day 5: Tawang
In the morning drive to Kitpi village where you will be able to see the traditional Monpa way of life. Walk around this beautiful village to experience firsthand the rural way of life. From here drive further down to Chuksom bridge, built in the 14th century over Tawang Chu river.

In the second half visit the Tawang Gompa, the biggest Buddhist monastery in India. The historic monastery has more than four hundred monks and also has a museum of religious and cultural artefacts. In the evening visit the Tawang War Memorial where you can also get to see the sound and light show. Overnight at Tawang homestay / Hotel Yangzom or similar

Day 6: Tawang
The higher reaches of Tawang have many glacial lakes, some of which you can visit. Drive to PT Tso lake and Sangetsar lake also popularly referred to as Madhuri lake. You will also take a detour to drive to Bum La pass on the China border. Relax for the remainder part of the day. Overnight at Tawang homestay / Hotel Yangzom or similar

Day 7: Tawang to Bomdila (226 kms; 7.5 hours)
Commence your return journey by driving back to Bomdila. On the way take a halt at Jaswant Ghar war memorial. On reaching Bomdila visit the GRL monastery. Overnight at Lungta Residency or similar

Day 8: Bomdila to Guwahati (269 kms; 8.5 hours)
After breakfast drive down to Guwahati, taking a different route which passes through Shergaon and Kalaktang. The route is very scenic and passes through thick temperate forests. In the evening shop for handcrafts around Guwahati. Overnight at Baruah Bhavan or similar

Day 9: Guwahati
After breakfast drop to Guwahati airport
