Buran Ghati Trek

Buran Ghati Trek

A trek that runs parallel to the Rupin pass trek in Uttarakhand. Located in the Pabbar valley, Buran ghati trek is a trek with beautiful sights and some amazing campsites. Buran ghati is a pass trek at 15000 feet. This pass crossing is one of its kind in the country. During icy conditions on the pass, we rappel down the pass. This is a unique adventure in its own. The feeling of crossing the pass at 15000 feet via rappelling is a thrilling experience.
Buran Ghati Trek

Day 1 – Shimla to Janglik, 6 – 7 hours/ 150 kms

It will take 7 to 8 hours drive from Shimla bus stand (old) to reach Janglik. The road is generally not in the best of conditions so we need to be prepared for a bumpy and tiring drive. Towards the end of the drive, the bridge that connects to Janglik village is sometimes not in use. In that case, we will do a 300 meter ascend to get to Janglik. Relax after checking into the homestay.

Day 2 – Janglik to Dayara, (9,100 feet to 11,100 feet)/ (5 to 5.3 hours)

We start the trek early in the morning. Today, it is goint to be a 5 Kms of trek with gradual ascend. We walk through the fields followed by a temple that leads into the forest. We cross 3 to 4 river streams to reach the Bakarwaal hut (shepherd hut). We stop for lunch (packed) at this spot and after some rest, we continue the trek. It will take about 1 hour to reach the campsite for the day, Dayara. Dayara is an one of the most beautiful campsites. Most of the times, we spot shepherds with their sheeps grazing near the campsite.

Day 3 – Dayara to Lithum (11,100 feet to 11,800 feet)/ (3 hours)

It is going to be a comparitively easy trek and will take about 3 hours. We start from Dayara after breakfast and walk through the dense forest trails into wide meadows and gushing streams. After crossing the stream, the trail leads out of the forest to an open patch from where we get some spectacular views of the snow capped Dhauladhar Range. Approximately 45 mins later, the trail descends into another beautiful forest pacth filled with the Himalayan Birch trees (Bhoj-Patra). We walk through this forest to get to our campsite for the day, Litham.

Day 4 – Lithum to Chandranahan and back (11,800 feet to 13,960 feet)/ (6 – 7 hours)

We could either use this day as a rest day or we could go explore the Chandranahan lake. From the campsite we follow the trail to our left with a gradual ascend. After a 2 hours trek, we can see the waterfall on the right. If the weather conditions and our team's physical capability permits, we continue the steep ascend to the lake else head back to the campsite.

Day 5 – Lithum to Dunda (11,800 feet to 13,420 feet)/ (4 to 5 hours)

We prefer to start this day early as the next day after this would be a long day. After breakfast we leave for Dunda. Just 30 mins after the start of the trek, we cross two lakes. The second lake is an extremely scenic and beaitful one. The source for both these lakes is the Pabbar river flowing on our right all throughout from Dunda. After clicking a few pictures, we resume our trek with a gradual ascend. After trekking for nearly 2 hours now, we have a steep ascend towards the left that leads us straight to the climb to Dunda.

We start the climb to Dhunda by following the well marked shepherds' trail that leads into the direction of the pass. About an hour of ascend and we will reach the ridge top of Dhunda. At Dunda we get clear views of Buran Ghati and the trail that leads to it. Dunda is the higesht campsite of this trek. We expect it to be very windy and cold at the Dunda Campsite.

Buran Ghati Trek

Day 6 – Dunda to Buran ghati pass to River campsite (13,420 feet to 15,000 feet to 11,900 feet)/ (10 hours)

Today's trek is going to be a difficult one. We start with a gentle ascend over boulders for about an hour till the base of the pass. Followed by an hour of steep ascend on snow/ boulders to reach the pass. We negotiate the pass followed by a 600 meter steep descend till the end of the snowline. This is going to be the most exerting part of our trek. If there is a lot of snow at the pass, we will use our technical equipment to rappel. And if the pass is clear of snow, we will descend over huge patches of boulders and scree. This descend will be quite long and physically challenging. After crossing the boulder patches, we will enter the treeline. It will take another hour for us to get to the campsite.

Buran Ghati Trek

Day 7 – River campsite to Barua (11,900 feet to 6,700 feet)/ (6 to 7 hours)

Today is going to be a gradual descend for about 6 hours. The route is going to be a well defined trail. There is a very beautiful waterfall over a rock-face, which needs to be crossed over using a wooden bridge. While crossing this bridge we feel the cold winds from the force of the waterfall. We get a strong smell of spices like "ajjwain" and the apple ciders are all the signs of the village of Barua. From here there is a cemented trail all the way till the bridge of Karcham. We trek till the last point of this village where the vehicles will be waiting for us. We head straight for Shimla the same day. Buses from Shimla to Chandigarh or Delhi could be booked in advance.
